Valtorx recently had the pleasure of visiting Kytra Lock on the Caledonian Canal, operated by Scottish Canals. When demonstrating our Portable Valve Actuators, we are lucky to visit some picturesque locations, and the Scottish Highlands did not disappoint. 

Though beautiful, the location comes with its challenges. The lock system at Kytra is electronically powered, but power outages in the area are not uncommon. When the power goes out, so does the ability to easily operate the valves required for the lock to function. This is where the JA73 Portable Valve Actuator from Modec was shown to be a very useful backup solution for Scottish Canals. 

Demanding Manual Operation

Without powered assistance operating the lock becomes a physically demanding and time intensive task. To equalise water levels operators must open four gate valves, two on each lock gate, each requiring around 600 turns. Once the water pressure is balanced the lock gates can then be opened, which take a further 800 turns each. This is just one end of the operation, the process then must be repeated on the other end. 

This has historically been carried out using T-keys or similar tools. While this is possible, it’s very time consuming and incredible physically demanding. This is exacerbated during busy periods on the canal, when boats are lining up to pass through. 

The JA73: Efficient, Safe, and Reliable

In order to reduce the time and physical toll this manual operation puts on the operators, we were invited to demonstrate the Modec MC89 and JA73 on these valves. It was very quickly clear to those on site how beneficial a Portable Valve Actuator would be. While the number of turns required remains the same, the strain on the operator is eliminated the operation time is drastically reduced.

The team at Scottish Canals opted to purchase a JA73 kit, as it showed itself to be an ideal solution that solved their issues in times of power outage.
